(News) UGC has approved yoga to be included in the 2017 NET
as good news for the students pursuing yoga as a subject in the universities and
colleges, the University Grants Commission has approved yoga to be included in
the National Eligibility Test (NET) from next year.
At a full Commission meeting of UGC last week, it was decided to allow
candidates with graduation and post graduation degrees in yoga to take the NET
The decision came after months when a panel set up by
ministry of human resource development (MHRD) had ruled out inclusion of yoga in
NET subjects. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s yoga guru H. R. Nagendra, who
headed the committee, had recommended this in order to make it a more attractive
career option for the ones learning it in all institutions.
“Since there was no NET exam conducted for post-graduates
students in yoga, they found it difficult to secure a teaching job but with this
decision there will be speedy recruitment of teachers in all universities and
colleges,” a senior official said.
